The largest island of the Greater Antilles, and the largest and most populous in the entire Caribbean, Cuba is gearing up for an anticipated boom in tourism that is being counted on to revitalise the moribund ecoomy. After 400 years of colonial rule, in 1898 Cuba became independent. During the last century of political upheaval, and especially since Fidel Castro came to power, Cuba has seen her fabulous treasures deteriorate. Havana was a grandiose city whose decaying architectural gems are sprinkled with centuries-old Spanish fortresses and fortifications.

* Approx exchange - Nominally 1 Peso = $1 U.S, however, the black market rate is 30 to 1. Unfortunately, Cubans are not allowed to accept Pesos from foreigners.
* Air Service - Charters and scheduled flights from Toronto, Montreal, Mexico City, Cancun, Nassau and many European countries. There has been a regular flight from Miami. However, it is available only to exiled Cubans and journalists.
